Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, commonly known as Erasmus of Rotterdam or simply Erasmus, was a Dutch Christian humanist, Catholic priest, theologian, educationalist, satirist, and philosopher. He was born on 28 October, approximately 1466, and died on 12 July 1536. Through his writings, Erasmus became one of the most influential thinkers of the Northern Renaissance and a significant figure in Dutch and Western culture. A leading figure of the Dutch Renaissance, he contributed to humanist thought and religious discourse during a period of major intellectual and cultural change.
