Diego de Landa Calderón was a Spanish Franciscan bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Yucatán. He led a campaign against idolatry and human sacrifice, during which he burned Maya manuscripts that contained knowledge of Maya religion and civilization. His documentation and research of the Maya people contributed significantly to the understanding of their culture, despite the destruction of many historical records. He was born in 1524 and died in 1579.
