Where to start with Doris Lessing

Begin with Martha Quest, the first book in the Children of Violence series, published in 1952. It introduces the protagonist, Martha, and traces her development through adolescence and early adulthood in colonial Southern Rhodesia. Proceed in publication order through the remaining four books of the series: A Proper Marriage, A Ripple from the Storm, Landlocked, and The Four-Gated City. This sequence offers a continuous narrative of personal and political awakening. Alternatively, start with Shikasta, the first book in the Canopus in Argos series, published in 1979. It presents a fictionalized account of Earth’s history through an interstellar perspective. Continue in publication order through the remaining four books: The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five, The Sirian Experiment, The Making of the Representative for Planet 8, and The Letters to My Daughter. These works form a distinct speculative fiction sequence. The Golden Notebook, a standalone novel published in 1986, is widely recognized and serves as a key entry point into Lessing’s later work.
