Dornford Yates was the pseudonym of the English novelist Cecil William Mercer. His works, which included humorous novels such as the Berry series and thriller fiction like the Chandos series, achieved best-seller status during the interwar period. The name Dornford Yates originated from combining the surnames of his paternal grandmother, Eliza Mary Dornford, and his maternal grandmother, Harriet Yates. The pen name was first used in print in 1910.
