Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American children's author and cartoonist who was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, to German-American parents. He attended public schools and later enrolled at Dartmouth College, where he became editor of the Dartmouth _Jack-O-Lantern_. He wrote for the publication under the pseudonym "Seuss" after being barred from extracurricular activities. After graduating, he contributed to the magazine The Judge and began signing his work as "Dr. Seuss." He attended Lincoln College, Oxford, to earn a D.Phil in literature but left before completing the degree to marry Helen Palmer in 1927. He supported himself and his wife during the Great Depression through commercial illustrations for companies such as General Electric and NBC. He also wrote and drew the comic strip _Hejji_ in 1935. Geisel wrote his first book, _And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street_, in 1937. During World War II, he created political cartoons for the newspaper _PM_ and produced propaganda posters for the U.S. government. After the war, he returned to writing children's books. In 1954, he wrote _The Cat in the Hat_ after being inspired by an article in _Life_ magazine. He wrote over 60 children's books, often under the pseudonyms "Dr. Seuss," "Theo. LeSieg," or "Rosetta Stone." He also wrote two books for adults. Geisel died in La Jolla, California, in 1991.
