Eben Alexander III is an American neurosurgeon and author. In 2008, he was placed in a medically-induced coma while being treated for meningitis. His book Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife (2012) details his near-death experience during the coma, in which he claims to have encountered an afterlife. He argues that the coma resulted in brain death and that consciousness exists beyond the brain.
