Ekkehard I, called Major or Senex (c. 910–973), was a monk of the Abbey of Saint Gall. Of noble birth in the Toggenburg region, he was educated at the monastery and, after joining the Benedictine Order, became director of its inner school. He was later elected dean of the monastery and for a time directed all its affairs.
