Elias Ashmole (1617-1692) was an English antiquary, politician, officer of arms, astrologer, freemason, and student of alchemy. He supported the royalist side during the English Civil War, serving as a captain in the artillery of Lord Astley's Regiment of Foot, and was rewarded with several lucrative offices after the Restoration of Charles II. In his later years he kept a diary that was posthumously published in 1717.
