Elizabeth Violet Cadell, also known as Harriet Ainsworth, was born in 1903 in Calcutta, India. She studied music in London during the Great War but chose not to pursue a musical career, later returning to India where she married and had two children. After being widowed ten years later, she returned to England, where she began writing fiction, publishing her first book, My Dear Aunt Flora, in 1946. She went on to write 51 additional light-hearted, humorous, and romantic novels, many of which were set in Portugal, where she moved in 1960. She died in 1989 at the age of eighty-five.
