Emily Dickinson was an American poet born in Amherst, Massachusetts, to a successful family with strong community ties. She attended the Amherst Academy for seven years and briefly studied at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary before returning to her family's home. She lived a mostly introverted and reclusive life, known among locals for her white clothing and reluctance to receive visitors or leave her room. Most of her personal connections were maintained through letters.
