Emma Goldman (June 27 [O.S. June 15], 1869 – May 14, 1940) was an anarchist political activist and writer. Born in Kovno, Russian Empire (now Kaunas, Lithuania) to a Jewish family, she emigrated to the United States in 1885. After being influenced by the Chicago Haymarket affair, she became a prominent lecturer and writer on anarchist philosophy, women's rights, and social issues. She founded the anarchist journal Mother Earth in 1906. Goldman was imprisoned multiple times for inciting riot and distributing information about birth control. She was associated with anarchist writer Alexander Berkman, her lover and lifelong friend, who attempted to assassinate industrialist Henry Clay Frick in 1892. Berkman was sentenced to 22 years in prison, while Goldman faced her own legal troubles.
