Eric Carle (June 25, 1929 – May 23, 2021) was an American children's book author and illustrator. He is best known for his book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969. The book has been translated into over 30 languages and remains one of the most recognized children's books worldwide. Carle illustrated more than seventy books, many of which he also wrote. His works have sold more than 71 million copies globally. He was recognized for his contributions to children's literature through his unique artistic style and storytelling.
