Erich Maria Remarque, born Erich Paul Remark on 22 June 1898, was a German novelist. He is best known for his novel Im Westen nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front), published in 1928. The book portrays the German military experience during World War I and became an international best-seller. It established a new literary genre and was adapted into a film in 1930. Remarque died on 25 September 1970.
