Ernst Bloch was a German Marxist philosopher who was influenced by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Karl Marx, as well as by apocalyptic and religious thinkers. He formed friendships with notable figures such as György Lukács, Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill, Walter Benjamin, and Theodor W. Adorno. His work centered on an optimistic teleology of the history of mankind. He was born in 1885 and died in 1977.
