Ernst Cassirer was a German philosopher trained within the Neo-Kantian Marburg School, initially influenced by his mentor Hermann Cohen to develop an idealistic philosophy of science. After Cohen's death, he formulated a theory of symbolism, expanding the phenomenology of knowledge into a broader philosophy of culture. He became one of the leading 20th century advocates of philosophical idealism. Cassirer argued that humans are symbolic animals, creating a universe of symbolic meanings through language, myth, science, mathematics, religion, and art.
