Erskine Preston Caldwell (1903-1987) was an American novelist, short story writer, travel writer, and essayist. His writings about poverty, racism, and social problems in the Southern United States, in novels such as Tobacco Road and God's Little Acre, won him critical acclaim. He wrote 25 novels, 150 short stories, twelve nonfiction collections, two autobiographies, and two books for young readers, and edited the 28-volume American Folkways series.
