Essie Summers, born Ethel Snelson Summers in Christchurch, New Zealand, was the daughter of parents who had immigrated from England. She grew up in a home that valued reading and storytelling, and from an early age showed a talent for making up stories. She left school early due to financial constraints and worked in retail for 13 years before marrying William Flett, a minister, with whom she settled into parish life across various regions of New Zealand. The couple had two children.
