Esther "Etty" Hillesum was a Dutch Jewish author born in Middelburg in 1914. She wrote confessional letters and diaries that detail her personal and spiritual development during the German occupation of the Netherlands. Her writings reflect her experiences of persecution and her inner life amid the turmoil of the Second World War. She was deported in 1943 and murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
