Eugene Bondurant Sledge was a United States Marine, university professor, and author. He wrote a memoir titled With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa which detailed his combat experiences during World War II. The book served as a source for the Ken Burns PBS documentary The War and the HBO miniseries The Pacific. He was born in 1923 and died in 2001.
