Florence Parry Heide was born in Pittsburgh and raised in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. She attended Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, transferred to the University of California at Los Angeles, and received her degree in 1939. After moving to New York City and working in advertising and public relations, she returned to Pittsburgh during World War II to serve as publicity director of The Pittsburgh Playhouse. Following the war, she relocated to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where she raised her children and began writing children's books, publishing her first book, Maximilian, in 1967, and going on to write more than 100 books for children, including several collections of poetry.
