Frances Hodgson Burnett was an English-American playwright and author who lived from 1849 to 1924. She was born on November 24, 1849, in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, England, to Eliza Boond and Edwin Hodgson. She was the middle of five children. Her father died when she was young, and the family moved, eventually settling in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she began selling stories to magazines. She married Swan Burnett in 1873 and had two sons. After the death of one son, she experienced severe depression and later divorced. She remarried but the second marriage ended within a year. She later settled in Long Island, New York, where she lived until her death in 1924. She is buried in Roslyn Cemetery in Greenvale, New York, next to her son Vivian.
