Francis Henry Durbridge was born in Hull, Yorkshire, and educated at Bradford Grammar School before studying English at Birmingham University. He began writing during his time as an undergraduate, selling a play to the BBC at the age of twenty-one and later writing full time while working as a stockbroker's clerk. He created the character Paul Temple, a crime novelist and detective, in 1938, with the character appearing in a series of radio plays, novels, films, and later television adaptations. Durbridge also introduced the character Tim Frazer, an undercover agent, as part of his literary output.
