Francis La Flesche

Francis La Flesche was born and raised on the Omaha Reservation, the son of Omaha chief Iron Eye. He met anthropologist Alice Fletcher in Washington, DC during a political tour with Ponca chief Standing Bear, which led to his collaboration with her on the Omaha Reservation. He served as her interpreter, field assistant, and later collaborator, documenting Omaha and Osage cultures, languages, and music through written records and cylinder recordings. He joined the Smithsonian's Bureau of American Ethnology in 1910 and retired in 1929.
