Francis S. Collins is an American physician-scientist and geneticist who discovered genes associated with various diseases and led the Human Genome Project. He served as director of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, for over 12 years. Collins announced his retirement from the NIH in March 2025 after 32 years of service.
