Francis "Frank" McCourt was an Irish-American teacher and writer known for his memoir Angela's Ashes (1996), which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1997 and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1996. The book recounts his childhood as a poor Irish Catholic in Limerick. He later wrote 'Tis (1999), continuing his life story as a new immigrant in America. His work Teacher Man (2005) explored his experiences as a teacher. In 2002, he received an honorary degree from the University of Western Ontario.
