Frank Yerby was born in Augusta, Georgia, to a mixed-race parentage, with an African American father and a Caucasian mother. He earned a B.A. in English from Paine College in 1937 and an M.A. in English from Fisk University in 1938. After brief teaching stints at Florida A. & M. College and Southern University, he moved to Detroit to work for the Ford Motor Co., which allowed him time to write. His first novel, The Foxes of Harrow, published in 1946, became a best-seller and was adapted into a film, though it drew criticism for its perceived lack of racial consciousness.
