Frederick Albert Cook was an American explorer, physician, and ethnographer known for claiming to have reached the North Pole on April 21, 1908, a date that preceded Robert Peary's claimed achievement by nearly a year. His expedition discovered Meighen Island, the only Arctic island in the American Arctic discovered by a U.S. expedition. A commission of the University of Copenhagen concluded in December 1909 that Cook had not proven his claim of reaching the pole. He also claimed to have reached the summit of Denali in 1906, a claim that has since been discredited.
