George Robert Gissing was an English novelist who published twenty-three novels between 1880 and 1903. Born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, to lower-middle class parents, he won a scholarship to Owens College, now the Victoria University of Manchester, where he excelled academically and won the Shakespeare scholarship prize in 1875. His best works were produced between 1891 and 1897, including New Grub Street, Born in Exile, The Odd Women, In the Year of Jubilee, and The Whirlpool. By the end of the century, he was regarded by critics as one of England's three leading novelists, alongside Thomas Hardy and George Meredith, and he was friends with H. G. Wells and his wife.
