Gershom Scholem

Gershom Scholem was born in Berlin, the son of a printer. He studied mathematics, philosophy, and Hebrew at the University of Berlin, and later received a degree in Semitic languages at the University of Munich. He emigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine in 1923, where he became a librarian and later head of the Department of Hebrew and Judaica at the National Library, and taught the Kabbalah and mysticism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He became the first professor of Jewish mysticism at the university in 1933 and remained in this post until his retirement in 1965.
