Harold Gregory Moore Jr. (1922–2017) was a United States Army lieutenant general and author. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1945 and was the first member of his class to be promoted to brigadier general, major general, and lieutenant general. Moore was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the U.S. military's second-highest decoration for valor. He commanded the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment during the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965, a conflict that was later chronicled in the 1992 book We Were Soldiers Once… and Young, co-authored by Moore. The book was adapted into the 2002 film We Were Soldiers, in which Mel Gibson portrayed Moore. He also received the Order of Saint Maurice from the National Infantry Association and the Distinguished Graduate Award from the West Point Association of Graduates.
