Nelle Harper Lee (1926–2016) was an American novelist who wrote the 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird, which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and became a classic of modern American literature. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007 and assisted her close friend Truman Capote in researching In Cold Blood.
