Harriet Martineau was an English social theorist recognized as the first female sociologist. She wrote from a sociological, holistic, religious, and feminine perspective, translating works by Auguste Comte and earning sufficient income to support herself—uncommon for a woman writer of her time. She advocated for a comprehensive focus on all aspects of society, including political, religious, and social institutions, and applied rigorous analysis to the status of women under men. The young Princess Victoria enjoyed her work and invited her to her 1838 coronation.
