Helen Bianchin was born in New Zealand and grew up as an only child with a vivid imagination and a love for reading. She began writing stories in her early teenage years and later worked in a legal firm after leaving school. She moved to Australia for a working holiday, where she met Danilo Bianchin, an Italian immigrant and tobacco sharefarmer, and later married him. After the marriage, she took on responsibilities including cooking for tobacco pickers, stringing tobacco, and caring for poultry.
