Helen Hunt Jackson (1830–1885) was an American poet and writer who became an activist for improved treatment of Native Americans by the United States government. She documented the effects of government policy in her history A Century of Dishonor (1881), and her popular novel Ramona (1884) dramatized the mistreatment of Native Americans in Southern California after the Mexican–American War. Commercially successful, Ramona was reprinted many times and drew tourists to the region.
