Major Hesketh Vernon Hesketh-Prichard, DSO, MC, FRGS, FZS, was a British writer, explorer, adventurer, big-game hunter, and marksman who contributed significantly to sniping practice within the British Army during the First World War. He introduced measures to counter German snipers that were credited with saving the lives of over 3,500 Allied soldiers. He explored previously uncharted territories, played first-class cricket, wrote short stories and novels—including one adapted into a film starring Douglas Fairbanks—and served as a newspaper correspondent and travel writer. He was also an active campaigner for animal welfare and helped secure legal protections for animals.
