Hiram Bingham III was an American academic, explorer, and politician. He publicized the existence of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in 1911, which he rediscovered with the guidance of local indigenous farmers. He served as the 69th governor of Connecticut for a single day in 1925, the shortest term in the state's history. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1924 and served until 1933.
