Horatio Alger, Jr. was a 19th-century American author known for his novels featuring impoverished children who achieve middle-class security and comfort through perseverance and moral virtue. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, he was the son of a Unitarian minister and attended Harvard University before studying at the Harvard Divinity School. After serving as a minister in Brewster, Massachusetts, he resigned following allegations of misconduct and relocated to New York City, where he became involved with organizations aiding underprivileged youth. His experiences and values inspired his prolific body of work focused on the "rags to riches" narrative.
