Howard Roger Garis (1873-1962) was an American author born in Birmingham, New York, who worked as a railroad employee before becoming a journalist for the Newark Evening News in 1900. From 1906 he wrote for the Stratemeyer Syndicate under pseudonyms including Victor Appleton (Tom Swift), Laura Lee Hope (Bobbsey Twins), Clarence Young (Motor Boys), and Lester Chadwick (Great Marvel series). In 1910 he introduced Uncle Wiggily, his most famous character.
