Howard Zinn (1922–2010) was an American historian, playwright, and socialist thinker. He served as chair of the history and social sciences department at Spelman College and as a political science professor at Boston University. Zinn authored more than 20 books, including the influential and best-selling A People's History of the United States. In 2007, he published a version of the book for younger readers titled A Young People's History of the United States. Zinn identified as a socialist and wrote about the Civil Rights Movement, the anti-war movement, and labor history. His memoir, You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train, was published in 2002 and later adapted into a 2004 documentary. He died in 2010 from a heart attack at the age of 87.
