Hugh Pentecost was a pen name used by mystery author Judson Philips, who was born in Massachusetts. He wrote suspense fiction and sports stories for pulp magazines during the 1930s and began writing novels after winning the 1939 Red Badge prize for short fiction. His notable characters included Pierre Chambrun, a sleuthing hotel manager, and the one-legged investigative reporter Peter Styles. Philips was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America in 1973 and continued writing daily despite declining health, with his final novel published posthumously in 1989.
