Dajian Huineng (638–713) was a Chinese Chán (Zen) monastic and the Sixth and Last Patriarch of Chán Buddhism. He is regarded as one of the most significant figures in the tradition. Huineng is said to have promoted a direct and immediate approach to Buddhist practice and enlightenment. He is considered the founder of the "Sudden Enlightenment" (頓教) Southern Chán school of Buddhism. Though his life is partly shrouded in legend, his teachings and legacy had a profound influence on the development of Chán and later Zen traditions.
