Hunter S. Thompson (1937–2005) was an American journalist and author, regarded as a pioneer of New Journalism. He rose to prominence with Hell's Angels (1967), a first-hand account written after living for a year among the Hells Angels motorcycle club, and went on to establish the participatory style of reporting he called "Gonzo", in which the writer becomes central to the narrative.
