Taqi al-Din Ahmad ibn Abd al-Halim ibn Abd al-Salam al-Numari al-Harrani, known as Ibn Taymiyya, was a Sunni Muslim scholar, jurist, and theologian. He was born in 1263 and died in 1328. A member of the Hanbali school of thought, he studied Islamic law and theology from an early age. He was known for his independent reasoning and often issued legal rulings that differed from traditional Hanbali interpretations. Ibn Taymiyya was involved in political affairs, including interactions with the Ilkhanid ruler Ghazan Khan. He also participated in the Battle of Marj al-Saffar, which ended Mongol invasions of the Levant. His criticism of certain religious practices, such as veneration of saints and visiting tombs, led to conflicts with religious and political authorities, resulting in multiple imprisonments.
