Jules-Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly was a French novelist, poet, short story writer, and literary critic. He is known for his mystery tales that explored hidden motivations and suggested evil without engaging with the supernatural. His work had a significant influence on writers including Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Henry James, Léon Bloy, Marcel Proust, and Carmelo Bene. He was born in 1808 and died in 1889.
