J. Christopher Herold was a Czech American university press editor and author active from the 1940s to the 1960s. He worked as an editor at Columbia University Press and Stanford University Press, where he focused on writing books about French history, particularly on figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Joan of Arc, and Madame de Staël. He received the 1959 National Book Award for Nonfiction for his biography Mistress to an Age: A Life of Madame de Staël. In 1960, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship.
