J. Frank Dobie was an American folklorist, writer, and newspaper columnist renowned for his books that portrayed the culture and traditions of rural Texas during the open range era. He was recognized for his liberal stance on Texas state politics and his criticism of what he perceived as boastful attitudes among Texans, religious prejudice, limitations on personal freedom, and the dehumanizing effects of industrialization. Dobie played a significant role in preserving the Texas Longhorn cattle breed from extinction.
