Jack Schaefer (1907-1991) was an American writer born in Cleveland, Ohio, son of an attorney. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1929 with a major in English, attended graduate school at Columbia University, then worked for the United Press before achieving success in 1949 with his novel Shane.
