Abbott was a 19th-century American writer known for his extensive body of work, particularly in the field of children's literature. From 1825 to 1829, he served as a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Amherst College. He was licensed to preach in 1826 and later founded the Mount Vernon School for Young Ladies in Boston, where he served as principal from 1829 to 1833. He also founded the Eliot Congregational Church in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and served as its pastor from 1834 to 1835. Abbott was involved in the establishment of several educational institutions, including Abbott's Institute and the Mount Vernon School for Boys in New York City. He authored 180 books and collaborated on 31 others, producing works in various genres, including juvenile fiction, history, biography, and religious literature. He died in Farmington, Maine, in 1879.
