Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897) was a Swiss historian born in Basel, the son of a Protestant clergyman. He studied theology in Basel and Neuchatel before moving to Berlin in 1839 to study art history, and studied at Bonn under Franz Kugler in 1841. His first book, Die Kunstwerke der belgischen Stadte, appeared in 1842. He taught at the University of Basel and at ETH Zurich, is known as one of the founders of cultural history, and taught art history exclusively from 1886 until his 1893 retirement.
