Jacques Rancière is a French philosopher who was born in 1940. He was a Professor of Philosophy at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee and an Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Paris VIII: Vincennes—Saint-Denis. After co-authoring Reading Capital (1965) with Louis Althusser and others, and after witnessing the 1968 political uprisings, his work moved away from Althusserian Marxism and developed into an original focus on aesthetics.
